About the dam.

Vaal Dam was constructed in 1938. The Vaaldam has 800 kilometers of shoreline and is South Africa's second biggest dam by area and the fourth largest by volume. The dam has a capacity of 2,609,799,000 cubic meters of water, a Surface area of 320 square kilometers and the dam wall is 54.2 m high.
Fishing and camping is available at all the Vaaldam holiday resorts.

Vaal Dam Fishing Tips, Spots & Fishing Bait.

Carp Bait: Plain and sweet white Dough, Mealie (maize) Pips, Sweetcorn, Floaties, Mallows, Earthworms, Tiger Nuts and Boilies.

Flavors: In general sweet flavors such as the following work well - Almond, Banjo, Liquid Betaine, Cherry, FX (caramel), Sweetcorn, Tigernut Extract Plus, Vaaldam (Strawberry) as well as stronger flavors such as Eucalyptus, Garlic, Vicks, Stuttaford, and fishmeal.

Groundbait: Plain mieliebom of your preference (Popcorn, Tigernut groundbait or Hemp & Tigernut Method Mix). If you are trying to catch the bigger carp a pre-cooked hemp, tiger nut and kaboem particle mixture will be the perfect option.


Yellow Fish Bait: Crabs the size a R5.00 or even a little bigger and also Fruit Torre.

Smallmouth Yellow Fish Bait: Use carp bait.
Fishing Tip: The Vaal Dam is massive in size and can be very intimidating when the wind begins to blow, but it's also 'the' time for fishing.
