This dam is very close to Rustenburg. Grassy banks make is a bit difficult to fish. Maybe a good spot for day visitors but not for a family outing. Catching barbel will be the best bet although there is rumours of some nice carp between 10-16 kg.
Olifantsnek Dam is situated on the southern out skirts of Rustenburg on the Magaliesburg road the R24. The river that feeds into the dam is the hex river. Olifantsnek dam is one of the Jules of the North West Province.
The entrance to the dam is just passed the Caltex garage on the R24 and before the bend you then turn right on to a dirt road down to the gate. What makes this dam so special? It has big carps, muddies that will pull your line and barbel that do not stop running.
What I love about this dam is you can sit in shallow water if you chose to or go and sit in deeper water on the fare left. You are spoiled for choice as all areas on the dam will produce fish for the angler. This dam caters for the novice all the way up to the competitive angler. With very few snags anglers are able to practice this wonderful sport of angling by targeting only carp or muddies even barbel, allowing anglers to hone thier skills and work on those important factors. Yes I am talking about bait presentation, casting accurately and working a very specific distance or depth depth. Once you have the fish onto your feed it’s only a matter of moments and your reel starts to spin. The game is now on and all you need to do is to look at the person smiling yes you have a fish on.
The bait options for Olifantsnek Dam is Sweet white dough, almond dough some earth worms and some pips and not forgetting soft and hard floats. Now the only other item needed is fresh feed the conoflex feed is not a bad choice however this is up to the angler. You now can play around with different styles of bait presentation as to the size of bait, thickness, length also mixing up the baits. An example of this would be an earth worm first followed by a cut flavoured pip. The baits will work on their own or as a combination all up to you.
What is my favourite dip combination you would ask? To start off with I would have almond dough on the bottom hook and the top hook I would put a honey float with dough behind it. My go to ball dip would be Why Not with Mystic Spice. I also would work my feeding area let’s say a 105 meter distance with a sliding rietvlei trace. Tjop tjop with black magic will also give you great results, just remember use your gut feel and that combo you believe in it will work for you.
It works for us then it will work for you. My choice of products is the conoflex range it works.
Hope you choose to try this awesome dam out, you will return that I promise you.
Enjoy your fishing trip to Olifantsnek Dam
